Our Story

The Maxys has been involved in business, media, entertainment, hospitality and technology for over fifty years.

To get to where we are today the journey has been both rich and diverse.

Peter and Beverley Maxworthy met in the early 1960s when Pete was the rhythm guitarist in the popular Sydney band “The Statesmen”. Within six years they had four kids (Brett, Scott, Nicolle and Dean) and were living in a boatshed at Como. To feed a young family Pete gave up his music lifestyle and studied accounting. Over the next 30 years, he would go on to become one of the most respected Corporate Treasurers in Australia – working for such companies as Goodman Fielder, Peko Wallsend and Kerry Packer.

In the early 70s, at the 13, oldest son Brett would become EMI’s youngest recording artist and would star as “Barney” in the Columbia Pictures film by the same name (or “In the Wild”)

Music and entertaining was the glue that held the family together and “The Maxys” family band performed at local Sutherland Shire pubs, clubs and events During the late 80s to 90s they had a 13-year monthly gig at Cronulla RSL and were the Cronulla Sharks home band. (Note Brett continues to entertain at Clubs across the Shire today)

During the personal computer revolution in the 1990s, Scott had several marketing roles including Computerland – the world’s largest PC reseller franchise and Creative Interactive Databases (a digital advertising platform) in London. It was during a night out in a London pub with Pete, Bev and Scott that the idea for Maxys Pub was born.

1996 – 2000 Owner and Management

Max Media and Entertainment was incorporated n 1996 when the Maxys took over management of “The Intersection Tavern” at Ramsgate, south of Sydney.

Dad Peter was Chairman (and lead guitarist); Mum Beverley the licensee, oldest son Brett the singer; second eldest son Scott the General Manager (and guitarist); Daughter Nicolle (singer) and husband Justin (piano) ran the bistro; and youngest son Dean the Cellar Operations Manager.

The hotel featured four bars, a bistro, a bottleshop, a function room, a gaming room and a live entertainment lounge (over five nights per week) and employed over 35 staff.

During that time they took the hotel from the verge of bankruptcy to a hugely popular local live entertainment and community-focused establishment.

Maxys also launched Maxys Cyberpub – Australia’s first online pub and bottle store (e-commerce).

2000-2007 Co-founded, major investor and management

Following the sale of the pub, Peter and Scott co-founded Australia’s largest online building & construction community connecting consumers with over 75,000 specifiers, builders, tradies & suppliers. Strategic partners included Telstra, Reed Elsevier, marketboomer and projectcentre.

The business was sold in 2007 after the tragic drowning of Peter (Chairman of BANGitUP and Max Media). whilst out fishing on his own in his little tinny on the beautiful Clarence River on the NSW Northern Rivers. PROJECT
